The Media Arts

January 1, 2010
So what is this artistic discipline - The Media Arts - all about?

The Ontario Arts Council describes it as:

... artists working with film, video, audio and digital media
as independent artist-controlled art forms.
They categorize the type of work as: animation, audio art, dance film/video, documentary, drama, experimental, media art installation, new media, web-based projects, media-based performance work, and any fusion thereof.
Additionally, from Wikipedia:
Media Art does not appear as a set of homogeneous practices, but as a complex field converging around three main elements: 1) the art system, 2) scientific and industrial research, and 3) politico-cultural media activism. There are significant differences between scientist-artists, activist-artists and technological artists closer to the art system, who not only do have different training and technocultures, but also different artistic production.

My personal interest in the media arts stems from producing interactive digital media for over 20 years. I would like to take my work in digital media to the next level, and I'm hoping that participating in the media arts will help me eventually achieve that goal. For more information about me, please refer to my bio.

I will publish on this blog, along with accounts at Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter, to provide information on my progress, gallery showings, projects and competitions, media arts in the news, or other related items I find interesting. I'm open to any and all questions, comments, feedback, or criticism, so don't be shy.

Because of the full blog's inherent nature, posts here will tend to be longer and contain more technical information. Tumblr is a cool microblogging platform so it will contain more immediate updates usually with some form of media. And Twitter of course to get any information out fast.
